Troplong Mondot 2022

Troplong Mondot

Case Format: 3x75cl

Max score: 100.0

The 37-hectare estate was promoted to the ranks of Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion in 2006 and dates back to 1745 when it was originally part of a substantial domaine which included the vineyards of Château Pavie. It became independent in 1850 when it was acquired by Raymond Troplong. After more than 80 years in the hands of the Valette family, today it is owned and run by French Insurance group SOCR, who brought in Aymeric de Gironde, formerly of Pichon Baron and Cos d’Estournel, to manage the estate and made massive investments in the cellar, as well as purchasing land from neighbouring Château Bellisle Mondotte and Clos La Barde.

Château Troplong Mondot occupies some of the greatest terroir situated on top of the Saint Émilion plateau and slopes, at an elevation of over 100 metres (the highest point in the appellation) which allows views of the entire village.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Troplong Mondot needs a swirl or two to awaken scents of blueberry compote, juicy blackberries, and Morello cherries, giving way to fragrant wafts of raspberry leaves, wilted roses, Ceylon tea, crushed rocks, and cedar, plus a hint of licorice. The concentrated, big, voluptuous, full-bodied palate is bursting with bright, shiny black and red berry layers, supported by super-plush tannins and fantastic tension, finishing with epic length and loads of mineral sparks. pH 3.48.

Violet edged with an inky core. Expertly delivers the sense of energy that is so key to the best wines in 2022. As powerful as you would expect from these clay-limestone soils, the vintage character shows in dried rosemary and white pepper spice, lacing the fresher blueberry and loganberry fruits. These are big tanins that take a long time to uncurl during tasting and will take a long time in bottle to come around. Contained power, with chocolate block, liqourice, dried roses, delicate but underpinned by menancingly powerful tannins, and a saline twist. Expert construction from director Aymeric de Gironde, carefully containing both the natural power of the soils of Troplong and the natural concentration of the vintage. 50hl/h yield. Harvest began on August 29 through to September 26. Thomas Duclos consultant. Around 3% whole bunch used during fermentation, aged in 55% new oak, 24% one year old, 21% large 2,000l oak casks.
