Valandraud 2020

Valandraud

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 99.0

Promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classe in 2012, Château Valandraud has a short, but dense history. As one of the pioneers of the 90s “garagiste” movement, Valandraud has humble beginnings. Starting at just 0.6 hectares in size, the wine was being made in the garage of owners Jean-Luc Thunevin and Marielle Andraud, of which the movement gets its name. Founded in 1989, Valandraud has grown over the last 30 years to 8.8 hectares in size, and has continued to receive much critical acclaim, with notable appreciation from Robert Parker.
Located North East of Saint-Émilion town, the estate benefits from a warm and fresh climate, which has helped to cultivate the wines acidity and lively, fruity aromas. Its vineyards are planted on a clay-limestone terroir, and comprise Merlot (c.65%), Cabernet Franc (c.25%), Malbec (c.4%) and Carmenere (c.1%). The final blend is matured in 100% French oak for between 18-30 months, depending on the quality and character of the vintage.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Opaque purple-black colored, the 2020 Valandraud bursts with scents of crushed black plums, boysenberries and blackberry preserves, followed by hints of dusty soil, garrigue and clove oil. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a lot of energetic, crunchy black fruits with a lively backbone and beautifully ripe, rounded tannins, finishing long and fragrant.

Juicy and alive, a brightness to this even though the fruits are dark in profile - blackcurrant, black cherry, herbal-tinged blueberries - heady and seductive. Layers of acidity, mint, freshness and toast combine to give quite a full and complex palate with everything at the fore yet staying the right side of being too much. Strong and characterful but totally charming. I love the St-Emilion glamour and muscle, softly flexing with a salty minerality and unmistakable signature.
