Solaia - Italian Fine Wine a strong investment case
Solaia is one of the classic Super Tuscans, from Antinori’s iconic Tignanello estate in Chianti Classico. The wine is a fine example of the sunny climates in which it is produced, with the wines all showing traits of opulence and intensity.
Solaia is a true left Bank Bordeaux blend, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc and more recently Sangiovese blended to create sweet ripe cherry and blackfruit flavours.
Solaia has all the trademarks of a great investment wine.
- Strong global brand recognition linked to the Anitinori family and the late, great enologist, Giacomo Tachis. Solaia became the first wine to be named ‘world’s number one wine’ by Wine Spectator (1997) and is recognised as one of the original 5 Super Tuscans.
- Low Production: Only 3,000-7,000 cases are produced annually.
- High Critic Scores : The last five vintages have an average critic score of 97 points from Monica Larner at Wine Advocate.
Solaia’s back vintage performance is both consistnent and impressive. If we look at the last 6 vintages which have entered their drinking windows, 2014-2009, they have an average 5 year return of 70.4%.
Solaia is a constituent of the Liv-Ex Italy 100 Index which boasts the highest Sharpe Ratio (risk adjusted return) in the wine investment sphere. Italian investment wines show strong defensive properties, outperforming in difficult macro environments, as highlighted in our Q2 2023 report.
