CHÂTEAU HAUT BRION

Château Haut-Brion is the only property from outside the Médoc to be included in the 1855 Classification and its viticultural history can be traced back further than its Médoc First Growth counterparts. It is, excusing the pun, a château of firsts; It was first of the 1er Grand Cru Classés as we know them today to exist, with a continuous record of production dating back to 1521. Whilst the Dutch were draining the Médoc swamp in the mid-17th century, to create the lands where Lafite, Latour, Mouton and Margaux would later reside, bottles of Haut-Brion were being sold and promoted in London, at owner Jean de Pontac’s tavern. On April 10, 1663, Samuel Pepys the famous English diarist and naval administrator gave what is considered the first professional review of any wine to Haut-Brion commenting that “here I drank a sort of French wine called Ho-Bryan that hath a good and most particular taste I never met with”. Taking the spelling error out of the equation, it’s clear that he understood what he was tasting something quite different to your usual run of the mill 17th Century fare.  Situated in what is now Pessac-Léognan, the property finds itself in the suburbs of the ever-encroaching city of Bordeaux. After falling into a state of disrepair the estate was purchased in 1935 by Clarence Dillon, an American financier, and since then it has enjoyed a steady and continual resurgence back to the position of one of the most renowned estates in all of Bordeaux.
