Cheval Blanc 2011

Cheval Blanc

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 97.0

The leading estate in Saint-Émilion, Château Cheval Blanc has continued to create beautifully complex wines that are unrivalled in terms of finesse, flavour and cellaring potential. Unusual for Saint-Émilion, Cheval Blanc uses majority Cabernet Franc in its blend (c.52%), resulting in a wine that is fresh, elegant and delicate. The 39-hectare estate is divided into 45 different plots where each one is treated differently to account for the age of the vines, soil type and more. Their rich terroir is formed of gravel, clay and sandy soils all which sit atop a sedimentary rock – this unusual mixed terrain is what allows Cheval Blanc to stand out. Château Cheval Blanc are committed to honouring the land that produces their magnificent wines and at the forefront of recent work has been an unwavering commitment to biodiversity and agroecology in a bid to allow the vineyards to thrive and to ensure the longevity of the estate amidst the ongoing crisis of climate change. Expect a gorgeous and expressive wine wrapped in velvety tannins and laced with aromatics. Each requires a minimum ten years of bottle age, with the best vintages lasting for 50 years or more.

The first vintage in the new cellar. Elegantly dark fruited aromas with cacao and cedar. Youthful impression on the palate, with raspberries and redcurrant crispness. The palate builds to a dense core with firm tannins and a refined underlying freshness. A warm, generous finish, round, ripe and black. The driest vintage in 15 years but with an even balance of cool weather and ripening, with a two heat spikes. The late harvest gives the mature tannins. Cheval Blanc was 64% of the production, Le Petit Cheval 23% and the 3ème vin 13%.

An underrated vintage, the 2011 Cheval Blanc is evolving brilliantly. Wafting from the glass with aromas of smoky cassis, blackberries, loamy soil, tobacco leaf, bitter chocolate, mint and violets, its full-bodied, velvety and multidimensional, with a layered core of fruit, rich and powdery structuring tannin and a long, resonant finish. While the 2009 and 2010 are more powerful and unctuous, readers who prize Cheval Blanc for its extraordinary complexity and unique perfume might well prefer the 2011, as it is a wine that could come from nowhere else.
