Cos D’Estournel 2016

Cos d'Estournel

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 100.0

The leading estate in Saint-Estèphe, the Deuxième Grand Cru Classé Cos d’Estournel is favoured for creating deliciously full-bodied and highly tannic wines, that once developed, have the ability to rival some of the top estates in the neighbouring Pauillac. The typical Cos d’Estournel blend usually includes Cabernet Sauvignon (c.60%), Merlot (c.38%) and Cabernet Franc (c.2%). Named after its nineteenth-century owner, Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, who in his lifetime built the incongruous Orientalist estate that stands out within the Bordeaux landscape, Cos D’Estournel is as infamous for its Château, as it is for its characteristically distinct and sensuous first wine.

One of the best Cos in recent years, a huge success although not showing as much of itself as the 2010 at this point, as you would expect with a concentrated Sauvignon-dominant classified St-Estèphe. First time for me opening this vintage since the in-bottle tastings a few years ago, and those gorgeous layers of cassis, blackberry and bilberry fruits are on full display with a little coaxing out of the glass, met step-by-step with a smoked caramel, bitter black chocolate and liquorice root twist. A brilliant wine with precision and confidence. Expect decades of enjoyment ahead of it, but not one to think about for another five or six years. 75% new oak.

Exceptional quality, silky tannins, cinammon, turmeric, cloves, grilled liqourice root, crushed rocks, almost seamless, so full of life and character, and brambled fruit. Chcooate, damson, so juicy and characterful, and singing of St Estèphe character, this is the appellation at its best. Decades ahead of it. Shame about the heavy bottle. 100% new oak.Michel Reybier owner, Aymeric de Gironde director (his last year in the role before heading over to Troplong Mondot).
