Figeac 2019

Figeac

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 100.0

Château Figeac is a 40-hectare estate located in the west of the Saint-Émilion appellation. Its identity is defined by the vines used to produce the first wine, where counter to other Saint-Émilion producers, Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc make up a majority of the blend (c.70%), with Merlot comprising the rest. Its singular gravel terroir is the only one of its kind in the appellation, allowing for the production of a refined, bold and distinctive wine. With touches of graphite and notes of spicey cedarwood, Château Figeac is a wine infused with biting energy and finesse, with a growing elegance that continues to develop with age. In 2022 Figeac was promoted to the level of Premier Grand Cru Classé “A”, which is only awarded to the most premium wines in Saint-Émilion.

A gorgeous deep purple colour to the rim. Expressive nose filled with blackcurrant pastilles, really quite concentrated and ripe with soft floral hints and some savoury aspects - the Cabernet Franc making itself known. Such texture on the palate, smooth tannins that coat the mouth have a ripe and juicy blackcurrant flavour, backed by a mineral, wet stone, graphite edge. Liner and direct on the palate, this is focussed and controlled, so precise with a real sense of forward motion. Elegant and seductive in a quietly confident way with a long finish. Totally captivating.

The 2019 Figeac is composed of 30% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Cabernet Franc, harvested from the 13th of September to the 7th of October. The alcohol this year is 14.1% and the pH is 3.7. Steal-your-heart scents of mulberries, black raspberries, Black Forest cake and cassis prance ever so gracefully out of the glass, followed by nuances of plum preserves, red roses, cinnamon toast and clove oil plus just a waft of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, the palate shimmers with electric energy, framed by a solid backbone of wonderfully ripe, grainy Cabernet-led tannins and bold freshness, finishing with fantastic persistence and with tons of emerging earth and floral layers. This is a simply stunning, seemingly effortless, beautifully harmonious expression of the vineyard and the vintage—bravo!
