Fombrauge 2021

Fombrauge

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 93.0

Château Fombrauge is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru property. It is the largest Grand Cru Classé property in the appellation, with a 59-hectare (143-acre) vineyard, and like many others in the region, has a Merlot-dominant blend. All of these factors contribute to a fresh and abundant wine that is best after at least five years of bottle ageing. Its sprawling vineyard means that it has a diverse range of soils that include chalky clay on limestone to iron-rich deposits and molasse soils. Fombrauge therefore has a highly complex terroir which is unusual for the appellation. Today the vineyards are planted with c.85% Merlot and c.15% Cabernet Franc, with the vines averaging about 30 years of age.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2021 Fombrauge is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it delivers notions of stewed plums, fruitcake, and Indian spices with hints of potpourri and wild sage. Light to medium-bodied, the palate has a sturdy frame of chewy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing just a tad hard and abrupt.

Ripe, chewy and mouthfilling, this is on the plusher side in terms of fruit flavour but with a core of velvet-like, quite grippy tannins that take hold and support the fruit. Lashings of dark chocolate, liquorice, vanilla and a cinnamon edge giving a lovely nuance of spice while the juicy fruit flavours linger on top. A dark, savoury style with plenty going on but delivered with refinement and clarity. Certainly one of the bolder styles.
