Gloria 2009

Gloria

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 94.0

Château Gloria is a wine estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Médoc wine region, just north of the city of Bordeaux. In 1942 the estate was taken over by Henri Martin, who began to purchase pockets of vineyard from neighbouring Grand Crus estates, to include Léoville Barton, Talbot and Gruaud-Larose. In turn, Château Gloria has continued to benefit from Saint-Julien’s exceptional terroir. Its vineyards contain Cabernet Sauvignon (c.65%), Merlot (c.25%), Cabernet Franc (c.5%) and Petit Verdot (c.5%) and is aged in both large oak foudres and 50% new small oak barrels. The resulting wine features washes of high-quality tannins and is teaming with cassis and warm cedar notes. This is an excellent wine that will continue to develop with age.

One of the best value St-Juliens, this is an estate that was beginning to come in to its own around 2009, and it shows extremely well here. The tannins increase a touch as you head north in the Médoc, filling the glass, but in St-Julien theyre always tempered by a blast of freshness and elegance. This is succulent, utterly delicious and pliable, with juicy black fruits. Its pretty much ready to go too, but with tons of life ahead of it. A bloody great wine, one I thoroughly recommend for its quality and value also.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. I was mean with my score at first. Tasted blind it felt a little aggressive, but the more it remained in my glass the more I can to appreciate it (one yearns for a decanter and more time in situations such as this.) There is still some oak to be resolved here, but this is well defined, more complex than its peers with blackberry, crushed stone, cedar and raspberry jam. The palate is medium-bodied with firm grip on the entry. Masculine, harmonious with good concentration on the finish, this is an extremely fine wine. Tasted January 2013.
