Haut-Brion 1990

Haut-Brion

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 98.0

Château Haut-Brion is the only property from outside the Médoc to be included in the Premier Grand Cru Classé (Classified First Growth) of the 1855 Classification and its viticultural history can be traced back centuries. Its Pessac-Léognan vineyard is planted to include Cabernet Sauvignon (c.40%), Merlot (c.18%), and Cabernet Franc (c.18%). Production for the Haut-Brion totals around 20,000 cases – smaller than any other First Growth wines. Château Haut-Brion is therefore highly sought-after. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats before maturation in new oak barrels for 22 months. Peppered with mineral aromas, this wine contains flavours and aromas of currants, smoky spices and cassis. With a higher Merlot content in comparison to its rivalling Médoc First Growths, it is both a brooding, voluptuous wine. The Château Haut-Brion also has great ageing capabilities.

Gorgeous, lifted, nervy – just right for current drinking, though Im sure it will last beautifully too. Absolutely unmistakably Haut-Brion with warm bricks in abundance. Not heavy. Tannins well melded. Quite a contrast to the youthful Latour 1990 served alongside.

Very close to Margaux in terms of its level of success, although with a more exuberant feel, touches of cinnamon, smoke, truffles and meat. Overall it is more opulent and rounded in the mouth than the other four firsts at this point and a seriously impressive glass of wine. This was an early harvest, and is clearly ready to drink with an exotic charm, but there is still a softly brushed tannic frame, and plenty of life ahead. A great period at Haut-Brion, with Jean Bernard Delmas at the helm of the winemaking.
