Haut-Marbuzet 2009

Haut-Marbuzet

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 93.0

Classified as a cru bourgeouis, the Château Haut Marbuzet creates some of the most acclaimed wines from the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Located just 2km north of the illustrious Cos d’Estournel, Haut Marbuzet also benefits from excellent terroir, with vineyards that are planted on gravel, clay and limestone rich soils. The vineyards comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.50%), Merlot (c.40%), Petit Verdot (c.5%) and Cabernet Franc (c.5%). The high percentage of Merlot contributes to the wine’s fleshy, warm character, which has also been accentuated by its 100% new oak maturation. A voluptuous wine that has the ability to be drunk young, Château Haut Marbuzet is full to the brim with plump fruit, chocolatey-vanilla, and deep oak aromas. It also is able to develop well with age and is usually at its best around 10-20 years after the vintage.

Jancis Robinson

Tasted blind. Particularly deep, evolved colour. Blackish ruby. Rather beautiful, mature nose. And then still quite a bit of tannin on the palate. You could drink this with food but you’d be well advised to wait – even though it’s softer than most.

For the last ten years, many Bordeaux chateaux have backed off the oak treatment, but not Haut-Marbuzet. Vivid, even aggressive vanillin and toast wage an inner struggle with some black currants and black cherries in this flamboyant, overtly woody style of wine. It is medium-bodied, has good to very good concentration, but is certainly not one of the great classics from this well-known property in St.-Estephe. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.
