La Mission Haut-Brion 2013

La Mission Haut-Brion

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 94.0

Lavishly intense and opulent, Château La Mission Haut-Brion’s characteristic wines are imbued with a rich history that dates back to the 16th century. The property of the Roman Catholic Church, it was repossessed after the French revolution before being auctioned off to its first American owners in the 19th century. Of the 30.7 hectare vineyard, 27 hectares are reserved for red grapes and comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.46%), Merlot (c.44%) and Cabernet Franc (c.10%). Its terroir consists of deep gravel over clay, sand and chalk in the topsoil and sees the vineyard placed on two ridges of gravel hills. Situated between the Ars and Peugue stream, the estate experiences moisture even in the hottest, driest vintages. All of these factors contribute towards the creation of a deeply complex, full-bodied wine that is bursting with smoke, tobacco, earth and spice perfumes. A highly tannic wine, Château La Mission Haut-Brion performs best after between 15-25 years of ageing.

Edges of grilled woodsmoke, this has character and depth, even edges of slate tannins that I have found in almost none of these wines. Soft and appealing, ready to drink, has charm and balance, and as with La Chapelle there is a sweetness to the raspberry fruit that is thoroughly appealing. One of the better choices in the vintage. 39% of production in this wine.

The 2013 La Mission Haut Brion, a blend of 65% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, has a very pretty bouquet. It is not intense or powerful, as you would anticipate given the growing season, but it unfurls in the glass to reveal wild strawberry, raspberry and dried quince scents, augmented by dried orange peel and bay leaf scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin on the entry. This is fresh in the mouth, focused and in the context of the 2013 vintage, quite vivacious, full of energy, especially on the finish. While it might lack the depth, that Merlot lends it the fleshiness that lifts this La Mission Haut Brion above others.
