Leoville Las Cases 1975

Leoville Las Cases

Case Format: 1x600cl

Max score: 94.0

One of the largest and oldest classified growths in the Médoc, Château Léoville Las Cases is the leading estate in Saint-Julien. Comprising Cabernet Sauvignon (c.61%), Merlot (c.21%) and Cabernet Franc (c.16%) the vineyard thrives on a terroir of gravelly sand and clay soils and features vines that average over 40 years of old, with some of the Cabernet Franc vines being over 90 years of age. Léoville Las Cases’ winemaking procedure remains as traditional as possible with grapes fermented in temperature-controlled wood, concrete or stainless steel vats. Some of the oak vats are over 50 years of age. Since 1987 Léoville Las Cases have use a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis machine to help extract excess water from the grape must. Originally considered controversial, this technology is used by many of the top chateaux in Bordeaux making today. The end result is a firm, structured a powerful style of Bordeaux wine. A highly tannic wine, it usually needs between 15-20 years of bottle ageing to fully develop.

Magnum. Very correct and dry but actually much sweeter and more winning than most wines made in the 1970s at this estate. Firmer and drier than the Ch Latour 1975 served alongside it. Strong blackcurrant flavours. Dry but fine and very Las Cases. A really good wine.

This is one of the great successes of the vintage. However, those with modern day tastes for soft, easy-going, supple wines may not enjoy the 1975 Leoville Las-Cases. Why? It is a tannic, backward, old style wine cut from the mold of such vintages as 1948 and 1928. The color is a dark ruby/garnet with a hint of amber at the edge. The nose offers up distinctive mineral, lead pencil, sweet, blackcurrant scents with flinty overtones. Full-bodied, thick, and concentrated, as well as atypically muscular and powerful, this should prove to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage. There are sensational levels of richness and intensity. While the vintages tough tannin level ensures another 20-35 years of longevity, the wine may dry out by that time. I thought this wine would be at its peak by the mid-nineties, but it still needs another 5-8 years of cellaring. It is a very impressive, albeit backward and hard wine.
