Leoville Poyferre 1996

Leoville Poyferre

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 95.0

Teaming with lush, juicy fruits, Château Léoville Poyferré offers a decadent wine where the distinct characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon truly shines. Expect aromas of cassis, spice and rich black fruits, coupled with sensuous and supple textures – both of which remain the hallmark of Léoville Poyferré’s spectacular grand vin. Once part of the larger Léoville estate, Léoville-Poyferre eventually stood on its own after the French revolution saw its previous home divide into Léoville-Las-Cases, Léoville Barton and Léoville Poyferre. Its 80 hectares of vineyard comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.68%), Merlot (c.24%), Cabernet Franc (c.6%) and Petit Verdot (c.2%) and are divided into five different blocks that are dispersed around Saint-Julien. The terroir is mostly gravel, sand, clay and limestone soils. Château Léoville Poyferré can be enjoyed on the younger side but is best after between 10-15 years of bottle ageing.

Inviting lifted perfumed nose with some cedar aromas coming through. Powdery, dry tannins cause some friction and the acidity is poking through a bit at the moment. I fear the acidity may outlast the fruit? (JH)

The 1996 Leoville-Poyferre has been a wine that has delighted and vexed in recent years. Now reaching its 20th birthday, the bouquet does feel a little disjointed with a tarry, herbaceous note that does not sync with the fruit. The palate is slightly better and the acidity is well judged. Yet that herbaceous, almost charred note comes through again and the finish feels dry and austere and a little bitter. Certainly compared to other Saint Julien wines, this is a Leoville Poyferre that falls short. Didier Cuvelier has numerous, much more successful wines to his name following this 1996, not a wine I would immediately reach for. I will resist scoring based on this bottle and seek to re-evaluate in the future. Tasted July 2016.
