Giuseppe Rinaldi, Langhe, Nebbiolo 2019

Giuseppe Rinaldi

Case Format: 12x75cl

Giuseppe Rinaldi is an Italian producer in the Piedmont sub-region of Barolo, the source of some of the most revered and valuable Nebbiolo-based wines of Italy.
The Rinaldi portfolio includes a Langhe Nebbiolo, a Barbera d’Alba and a red wine made from Freisa, a little-known native Piedmont variety.
Langhe Nebbiolo is a red wine in the Piemonte region of northern Italy. It is one of a number of subsets for specific grape varieties and styles within the Langhe DOC.

It is generally considered as a junior version of Barolo and Barbaresco. The wines can still share much of the full bodied character and structure of its bigger siblings. They also have similar floral aromas and subtle notes of red cherry.

Ive never before tasted a Langhe Nebbiolo of such amazing complexity and perfect structural refinement. The 2019 is the first vintage with Marta and Carlotta Rinaldi at the helm, after their father Giuseppe passed away the year before, and this wine is the greatest way to preserve the culture of the estate, which is known for its classic wines. A glass which shines for its ruby colour, with an intoxicating elegance tailored by a full, restrained character of smoky woodland aromas, blood orange, strawberry and rhubarb root, integrated with liquorice and balsamic depth. Full on the palate, it is dense and broad with an incredible sweetness to the tannins and outstanding length.

The 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo was bottled in March and was being prepared for release when I tasted this sample at the winery in July. Fruit comes mostly from the Ravera cru (the highest elevation rows of Ravera go into the TreTin blend), and the lower part of this vineyard site was previously planted to Dolcetto but recently converted over to Nebbiolo. That new fruit is earmarked for this wine. Additional fruit is sourced from the 1.3-hectare Bussia Sottana parcel. This is a fresh, mid-weight wine with bright primary intensity, cassis and dark cherry. Floral nuances and licorice round off the accessible mouthfeel.
