Odyssee 2016

Pierre Graffeuille

Case Format: 6x75cl

This is an intriguing wine and passion project from two great vignerons – Pierre Graffeuille of legendary Second Growth Léoville Las Cases and Matthieu Dumarcher. Matthieu brings his extensive knowledge as a natural wine producer in the Rhône Valley, creating some of the most interesting low intervention wines to date. Both Matthieu and Pierre dreamed of creating a beautiful wine that married both terroirs from the Rhône and Haut Médoc. Initially Odyssée used Syrah from the Northern Rhône in the blend with Cabernet Sauvignon from the Haut Médoc in its inaugural 2015 vintage. Though both the Rhône Valley and the Médoc are separated by a great distance, the varietals local to each area go fantastically well together. Each vintage of Odyssée is a harmonious union of both the energy and tannin from rustic Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon, coupled with the charm and drinkability of Southern Rhône Valley wines. The wine is aged in French barrels and carefully integrated with the oak as not to compete with the fruity qualities of the Rhône varietals. Odyssée is truly a special project, capturing both the treasures of the Rhône and Médoc.

Pierre Graf’s blend of Médoc and Rhône material is a thing of beauty. This has a riot of ripe red and purple-berry aromas with a wealth of fragrant, floral and cocoa-powder notes. There’s a smooth and succulent feel to the gently grainy palate that holds super fresh and seamless into the juicy finish. Polished and delicious blend of 63% cabernet sauvignon from North Medoc, 23% grenache from Rhône Valley and syrah from Rhône Valley. Drink or hold.

I tasted the 2015 and 2016 of this wine, and this one for me is the best of the two. A powerful mix of Cabernet, Grenache and Syrah that suggests Gigondas power with a more structured tannic backbone. It comes from a mix of two terroirs - Médoc gravels and Rhône granite and loam - which translates on the palate to the Cabernet giving clear tannic structure and dark cassis fruits that melt into the richer blackberry and raspberry fruits of the southern Rhône varieties. Concentrated yet welcoming, highly enjoyable, with tight spices. Blend is completed with 9% Mourvèdre, 8% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot.
