Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux 2011

Margaux

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 92.0

The second sibling of the illustrious Château Margaux, this gorgeous second wine is not to be overlooked. The quality is not far from that of the first wine, as Pavillon Rouge is cultivated on plots that once would have contributed to the blending of Château Margaux. Steeped in history, Château Margaux can date itself back to the sixteenth century. Currently a First Growth property, the estate creates some of the finest wines in the Médoc. Owned by the Mentzepoulos family since 1977, Margaux has consistently created exceptional wines under the same family for the past five decades and the Pavillon Rouge is no exception. Expect a similar style to the first wine, imbued with a similar sense of softness and abundance of flavour. Ready to drink earlier than the first wine, Pavillon Rouge still has good ageing potential.

The delicious, sexy 2011 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux reveals a dense ruby/purple color along with broad, expansive red and black fruit, flower and spice notes. Supple and round with finesse, elegance, complexity and richness, it is everything a second wine should be. Enjoy it over the next 15+ years.

The Pavillon Rouge is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. It has a very fine, elegant bouquet with blackberry, briary, black olive and a strong mineral content. It is finely focused, but not potent. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, tensile tannins on the entry and a core of brine-tinged black fruit. It errs towards a more masculine Pavillon than feminine, prioritizes focus over flamboyance with a tightly-wound, citric finish. This is very fine, but it will need two or three years in bottle. Tasted April 2012.
