Rauzan-Segla 2018

Rauzan-Segla

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 99.0

In the 19th century Château Rauzan-Segla was considered one of the leading second growth properties, partnered alongside the reputable Mouton Rothschild. Today Rauzan-Segla still upholds its stellar reputation for creating spectacular wines. Following a period of reputational decline, from the 1980’s onward it embarked on a renaissance before eventually being bought by Chanel in 1994. Today it comprises 45 hectares of vineyard of which are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (c.63%), Merlot (c.35%) and Cabernet Franc (c.2%) with a majority of the vines located on the Cantenac plateau. The terroir of Rauzan-Segla is mostly gravel with clay soils and the final blend is matured in 60% new oak for 18 months. Today Rauzan-Segla is honoured for creating spectacular wines, with the 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages described as “spellbinding” by critic Jeff Leve. This wine has incredible ageing potential and properly begins to open up with age. With time it is known for delivering complex floral and spicy notes, packed with concentration and juicy ripe fruit.

Aromas of crushed blackberries and blueberries with dried flowers and bark, following through to a full body with a tight and powerful palate of beautiful fruit and chewy yet polished tannins that are compressed and impressive. Extremely linear and intense. Muscular, in a toned way. Yet it opens in the mouth at you taste it. 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. Drink after 2025.

Reminding me of the 2016, the 2018 Château Rauzan-Segla reveals this beautifully fresh, complex bouquet that still has serious richness and depth. Based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, raised in 65% new barrels, it offers a dense purple hue to go with gorgeous notes of blackcurrants, spring flowers, cigar wrapper, and sandalwood. A quintessential Margaux with its spicy, complex, floral character, its full-bodied and has a supple, elegant texture, no hard edges, a solid spine of acidity, and a great, great finish. This is a brilliant, heavenly 2018 to enjoy over the coming 30 years or more.
