Redoma Branco 2017

Niepoort

Case Format: 6x75cl

The grapes used for the Redoma Branco originate from old vines growing on the right bank of the Douro River, at an altitude of between 400 and 600 metres. Here, the predominant grape varieties are Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho, Donzelinho and Gouveio. The mica schist soils in which these vines thrive lend the resulting wines plenty of minerality, elegance and vibrant freshness. A delicate bouquet reveals floral and citrusy notes, orchard fruit, herbaceous aromas as well as hints of hazelnut which lend the wine further complexity and character. This is a seamless white Douro wine with incredible balance and great ageing potential.

Niepoort is a historic, family-owned producer of Port and table wines in the Douro Valley, in northern Portugal. It was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1842, and is now known for its distinctively packaged and energetically marketed wines.

More herbal than citrus though theres tangy grapefruit. Taut, lean and sinewy. Long, smoky/mineral finish. Ive given a long drinking window because I recently tasted a fabulous 1996 – so it will probably drink well for even longer than I have suggested. (JH)

The 2017 Redoma Branco is a field blend from old vines featuring Rabigato, Códega, Viosinho, Donzelinho and others, aged for eight months in 85% used French oak. It comes in at 13% alcohol. Sharp and fresh, this handles its wood beautifully, showing precision and liveliness. Long on the finish, this is a pretty fine Redoma that seems to handle the difficulties of the vintage well. Niepoort called this one of his best. It looks that way, although time will be the ultimate judge, and I still wonder how 2017s will do in the longer run. Niepoort suggested this might last 20 years. All of his wines age well—it is part of who and what Niepoort is. Lets try to check in every now and then, though.
