Suduiraut 2010

Suduiraut

Case Format: 24x37.5cl

Max score: 95.0

A rich, highly concentrated Sauternes, Château Suduiraut is a guaranteed staple for anyone who has a penchant for sweet wine. The 2022 vintage received exceptionally high scores, with Jeb Dunnuck stating that it “one of the finest Sauternes I’ve been lucky enough to taste in some time”. At 200 hectares in size, its 92 hectare vineyard comprises Semillon (c.80%) and Sauvignon Blanc (c.20%). However, its 2022 vintage its one of only three vintages in its history that has used a blend of 100% Semillon. Bordering the illustrious d’Yquem, Suduiraut also benefits from superb terroir which sees the vines root on gravelly, sandy soil. Thin soil with little water leads to low yields, which forces the vines to take nourishment from deep underground, and in turn leads to the wine’s outstanding opulence. Its misty climate is what enable botrytis to thrive, which in turn forms a highly concentrated, rich nectar. Harvested in several stages, the fruit is aged in 33% new barriques for 24 months. The estate produces a sweet white wine classified premier grand cru. Their wine is characterized by its complexity, softness and body; it is also renowned for its longevity. It is composed of 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc.

Along with Chateau Rieussec, the Suduiraut 2010 is a candidate for best Sauternes of the vintage. It has a wonderful bouquet with an instantaneous sense of completeness and harmony, with layers of botrytized fruit intermingling with apricot blossom, peach skin and marmalade. This is powerful, but not in your face. There is no need to be. The palate is well-balanced with a viscous opening. There is plenty of botrytis here, good acidity and enormous weight on the finish. Perhaps it needs a little more tension, but otherwise this is a very impressive wine for the Sauternes vintage.

Tropical fruit flavours on the nose, caremelised pineapple with bright candied lemon alongside wonderfully sweet floral notes and a hint of burnt edges running through the wine from start to finish. This has a really characterful flavour with orange marmalade and a touch of enjoyable bitterness on the finish giving depth and roundness. Strong and robust, definitely a wine to enjoy with food be it sweet or savoury. A blend of 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, aged 50% in new barrels, 50% from barrels of one vintage for 20 months.
