William Fevre, Chablis Grand Cru, Bougros 2021

William Fevre

Case Format: 3x75cl

Max score: 17.0

This Climat lies at the very western end of the Grands Crus area, at altitudes ranging from 130 to 170 m on fairly deep marl and clay terrain with a southwest exposure. On the palate, this appellation’s wines are often very full and rich. The wine has a rich bouquet with intense mineral notes. Full and round, yet firm and massive on the palate.

When William Févre declared their first vintage in 1959, they owned just seven hectares of vineyard. Today they have 78 hectares of some of the most prestigious terroir in the world. The deep Kimmeridgian (clay & limestone) soils of Chablis give the wines their incredible freshness and minerality. Commitment to quality is not in question and talented winemaker Didier Séguier, at the helm since 1998, crafts some of the region’s most characterful wines. Harvesting is all done by hard, allowing for fruit to arrive at the winery in prime condition, ahead of a judicious sorting to only select the very best quality.

Cask sample. Lots of lovely, fine fruit and a strong wet-stones character. Already relatively accessible but all that acidity (and fruit) should keep it going a nice long time.

The 2021 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros is one of the richer, more gourmand wines in the range, revealing aromas of peach, orange, white flowers and freshly baked bread. Full-bodied, fleshy and ample, its a broad, mouth-filling Chablis with bright acids and a precise, saline finish. This has turned out especially well.
