William Fevre, Chablis Grand Cru, Les Clos 2019

William Fevre

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 98.0

This is the largest and most famous Grand Cru; its fame based on its history as one of Chablis’ first vineyards. The appellation enjoys a southerly aspect with very white, dense and deep clay soil, resting on a limestone bed 80 cm below the ground, which brings to the wine those spicy notes so typical of this terroir. This has a remarkably complex bouquet, blending fruity, floral and spicy notes with a substantial mineral touch. Structured palate, opening up with age to give powerful, generous wines.

When William Févre declared their first vintage in 1959, they owned just seven hectares of vineyard. Today they have 78 hectares of some of the most prestigious terroir in the world. The deep Kimmeridgian (clay & limestone) soils of Chablis give the wines their incredible freshness and minerality. Commitment to quality is not in question and talented winemaker Didier Séguier, at the helm since 1998, crafts some of the region’s most characterful wines. Harvesting is all done by hard, allowing for fruit to arrive at the winery in prime condition, ahead of a judicious sorting to only select the very best quality.

Incredible wine here with cooked-apple, lemon-curd, vanilla-bean and praline aromas that follow through to a full body with layers of fruit and a long, flavorful finish. It shows aniseed, licorice and fennel seed.

Les Clos needs no introduction being the largest and most famous Grand Cru. Fevres 2019 is a stunning combination of power, purity and elegance. The ripeness of 2019 comes through in the lovely stone fruit flavours but the class of Les Clos is shown by the structure and acidity on the palate. Oak has been used but is really not evident on the palate. There is great drive here with vibrant characters of zesty citrus fruits, saline notes and a lingering mineral finish.
